A sound business plan is the key to attracting private equity financing. Entrepreneurs are often nervous about writing such a document, yet they have all the information to hand without even realizing it.
The business plan needs to present the company and its management team. It should explain the market in which the company is operating and the competition, outlining the market opportunities and threats. It should also contain a development plan for the company, including a financial analysis, with projections for the next 3 to 5 years.
How to write a business plan?
The company. We would like to get to know the company we are to invest in. Please provide background information about your company, its principal areas of activity, employment, the structure of income and costs, and the profitability levels of its main products or services.
Management team. We would also like to get to know the managers and find out about their education, career, experience and achievements. It is up to you to convince us that we will be dealing with an effective team of people who have complementary knowledge and skills.
Market opportunities. This is the key part of your business plan, in which you should outline the unique features of your products or services as well as the current and future market situation. Please present your main clients, pricing levels, and distribution channels.
Competition. Apart from presenting your main local and foreign competitors, it would be useful to compare prices, costs, margins, procedures, customer feedback and market research.
Development plan. This part should comprise an investment plan that includes a profitability analysis of the individual components, a marketing plan that outlines your approach to sales, distribution, pricing, and marketing techniques, and an operational plan showing the company structure, communication, management, and employment.
Financial Analysis. This needs to include economic assumptions as well as an income statement, balance sheet and a statement of cash flows. All projections should be based on the company's actual results.
